Rubella vaccine should be injected in advance.

If mother-to-be infects with rubella virus in the early time, it is greatly possible to influence the development of the baby’s eyes directly although there may be no great harm to the mother herself. If possible and unlucky, it will lead to the happening of congenital cataract. Therefore, it is a very effective way to prevent the baby from having congenital cataract by injecting rubella vaccine before the pregnancy.

Prenatal education is of great importance.

Appropriate outdoor activities to enjoy the sunshine will be helpful to the absorption of calcium. Suitable amount of sun exposure is also good to the development of the baby’s visual cells and cornea. This is called the Light Prenatal Education.

Pay attention to take in sufficient vitamins.

Vitamin A: it is known to us that vitamin A has great important function of helping the development of the body’s cells and the growth of the eyes. When the body is short of vitamin A, the ability for the eyes seeing things at night will decline. If this bad situation continues, it may develop into the dry eyes—you will feel it is rather dry in the eyes and the cornea becomes thick. Food rich in vitamin A could be livers of different animals, carrot, leak, spinach, egg yellow, and so on. It is suggested by doctors that these mother-to-be should take in about 5000 international units per day.

Vitamin B1: this vitamin has the determinative effect on the growth and development of the baby’s brain and helps to perfect the nervous system of the baby’s eyes. Vitamin B1 could be largely found in the food such as wheat, fish, meat, and so on. Mother-to-be should take in about 1.5 mg per day.

Vitamin B2: generally speaking, there are two types of vitamin B2—riboflavin and nicotinic acid. Riboflavin could guarantee the normal metabolism of the retina and cornea; and lack of nicotinic acid will bring about optic neuritis and retinitis. Many foods have great amount of vitamin B2, such as milk, lean meat, lentils, and other green vegetables. Mother-to-be should need about 1.5 mg a day.

Vitamin C: it could improve the resistance ability and help the growth of corneal epithelium and the repair of the mucosal tissue so as to prevent the happening of cataract. Fresh fruit and vegetable is the best food resource of vitamin C. The amount that mother-to-be should have is about 100 mg per day.

If mothers-to-be could pay more attention during the whole process and develop good habits in their daily life, the born baby would be pretty healthy and beautiful, especially with a pair of bright and healthy eyes.
