August 18, 2009 –The report on New York Times published on August 3, 2009 with the title “Making Eyeglasses That Let Wearers Change Focus on the Fly” attracts the eyes of eyeglasses wearers and people involved in eyeglasses industry, and thus igniting a heated debate about its prospect.

According to the NY Times report, the inventor Stephen Kurtin has created a new kind of glasses with a tiny adjustable slider on the bridge of the frame that makes it possible to focus alternately on objects in different distances.
Researches show that people over 40 years old are likely to suffer from presbyopia and in need of progressive eyeglasses. In the United States of America, there are 4000,000 people presbyopia sufferers every year, most of them are middle aged around the age of 35 to 50. Kurtin has spent nearly 20 years to create trifocals eyeglasses, which he believes can free nearly 2,000,000,000 people from multifocal eyeglasses.
While, since the report was released on NY Times, an intense discussion has been sparked.
As to the design, some questioned that the designer has obviously never worn progressive glasses because people don’t decide to focus on something and adjust the slider accordingly in real life. Everyone who wears progressive eyeglasses knows that people are always adjusting the focal points unconsciously.
Still, the glasses lens has three components and seems much thicker and bigger, which goes against the pursuit of most modern people. Most of net citizen show although they are in desire of adjustable-focus lenses, they don’t want heavy, large and round lenses. However, the company’s founders of TruFocal eyeglasses do not think the shape will be an obstacle for its popularity.
When it comes to the popularity, TruFocals glasses are hard to be accepted by all eyeglasses wearers due to its usability, while they may take some market share among office workers who need to look at computer screens and read books, magazines and newspapers as well.
Speak of the price, one of the most important points consumers would take into consideration when they are engaged in shopping, TruFocals glasses show no preponderance. A pair of TruFocals eyeglasses is sold at $895, which is rather expensive than any other eyeglasses. One net citizen shows, thousands of regular prescription glasses in sound quality are available online less than $100; no one will spend so much on a pair of eyeglasses.
It is the general rule that anytime a new thing is born, there is sure some discussions arousing. Newly-emerged things always have to experienced difficulties and setbacks as they grow. Let’s wait expectantly for the prospect of the new invention in eyeglasses industry.
